We know you’ve worked on sites and carried out lifting processes for years. You know your job inside out and feel confident you can work safely and avoid injuries.
However, we must always bear in mind that we work with potentially dangerous machinery, must work as safely as possible. When we’re busy, it’s easy to cut corners.
Here are some general tips to bear in mind for safe lifting:
- Plan the lift equipment. All lifts should be planned in advance, even something as small as a chain hoist operation – this will often come under usual risk assessment processes. Written plans should be developed when needed, for example if you are carrying out a complex operation – this could involve lifting irregular loads, technical rigging or lifting with no (or partial) outriggers.
- Ensure everyone is fully trained. Everyone using work equipment must have received adequate training, covering operation, risks and precautions to be taken. Most training can be delivered in house, using manufacturers’ instructions and the knowledge of experience staff members.
- Inspect equipment visually. Equipment must be thoroughly examined before the first use and regularly after that. However, you should check equipment like hoists and clamps visually before beginning work.
- Remember to move safely and carefully. Working with lifting equipment is never predictable and you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watch out for others as well as for yourself.
- Wear safety clothing when needed. If you are working at height, the right fall arrest equipment is essential. If might also be appropriate to wear high visibility clothing when working on site.
